Many blogs try and dive deep into hydration; however, some people still don’t understand the following:
1- What happens to water at a cellular level?
2- How does your body respond to water?
3- Does water hydrate you?
Our nutritionist Georgina is going to help answer these questions and explore the truths when it comes to hydration.
So, what is hydration?
Hydration is your body’s ability to absorb water and vital nutrients it needs to allow each and every cell in your body to function optimally.
Water is arguably the second most crucial element after oxygen. This is because the human body along with every other living thing requires water to survive.
Water makes up around 85% of your brain, 80% of your blood, and 70% of lean muscle. It is essential to replenish your body and cells with water and stay well hydrated as your body losses fluids throughout the day through sweat, digestion, and even breathing.

It is vital to know that when we are talking about water for hydration, we aren’t just referring to water as H2O. Water is a universal solvent because it always combines with things in our environment and therefore, water is H2O with other things dissolved into it.
There are many nutrients that plays a critical role in achieving optimal hydration and these are Ionic Minerals & Trace-elements and Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) in particularly Omega 3.
EFA are involved in the production of certain hormones associated with your tissue cells such as prostaglandins which influence the regulation of cell hydration. When you consume a diet that is low in EFA or if you have an imbalance of Omega 3:6 this can have a cascade effect on the balance of prostaglandins which can lead to a decrease in cell functioning which over time can increase the risk of dehydration at a cellular level.
If you don’t replenish your body with the correct proportions of water, 78 ionic minerals & trace elements, and EFA then you will never be fully hydrated at a cellular level. This is because these three elements; water, ionic minerals, and EFA all work in synergy with each other to support overall peak cellular function which will enhance your cell’s ability to hold water more effectively and increase hydration status throughout your entire body. If your body is lacking in any of these components, then your cells will not be able to function optimally reducing their ability to hold water effectively which will result in your body just excreting the fluid you consume.
We have touched on the importance of hydration and how to hydrate at a cellular level using water in combination with ionic minerals and EFA. However, I think it is also key to understand the cascade effect that poor/inadequate hydration levels can have on your body and overall health and wellbeing.
Did you know that by the time you feel thirsty, your body is already dehydrated?
When your body is in a state of chronic dehydration it can divert water from low priority organs (skin, colon) to higher priority organs (kidneys, heart, and brain) which can cause changes to these cell’s ability to function effectively and efficiently which in time can cause negative effects on your health. This is because when your body is very dehydrated this causes your cell membrane to increase its coating of cholesterol which forms a protective wax type of layer. Your cells respond in this way so they can hold onto the current water present to prevent any further effects of dehydration. If your body carries on being in a state of constant dehydration, then your cells carry on producing more of this protective layer which over time can act as a barrier that will reduce the effectiveness of nutrients, water, and waste products from passing through the cell membrane which can alter your cell’s ability to function properly.

It is key to note that cellular dehydration and mineral imbalance is not an immediate worry for your body, but when these imbalances build up over longer periods this is when issues can arise.
